SOTACARBO

Società Tecnologie Avanzate Carbone

Sotacarbo is a research and development company (shareholders: Regional Government of Sardinia and Enea, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) that operates in the field of clean energy technologies, with particular reference to biomass and waste gasification, green hydrogen and renewable fuels, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).

Sotacarbo currently represents Italy in the SET Plan Implementation Working Group on CCUS and in the International Energy Agency - International Centre for Sustainable Carbon (IEA-ICSC), and is member of International Energy Agency - Greenhouse Gas Programme (IEA-GHG), CO2 Value Europe association and the European Union’s Renewable and Low-Carbon Fuels Value Chain Industrial Alliance (RLCF Alliance).

Sotacarbo R&D activities are mostly based on a wide research infrastructure, which includes bench-, pilot- and demonstration-scale units, as well as advanced laboratories, to test different technologies at TRL 4 to 7. Most of the Sotacarbo experimental facilities are part of the ECCSEL network since its establishment, covering all the CCUS chain: capture (with liquid solvents and membranes), utilization (by means of thermochemical and electrochemical processes) and storage (site characterisation and monitoring). And new pilot-scale facilities have been recently added for the open access.
