Carbon dioxide

UTILISATION

'CO2 Utilisation' facilities included in the ECCSEL Research Infrastructure

In line with the ECCSEL ERIC vision “Enabling low to zero CO2 emissions from industry and power generation”, in ECCSEL included CO2 Utilisation areas:

  • Should have a significant positive impact on climate change
  • Has obvious smart system integration potential with CCS

The rationale for CO2 utilisation research is to advance science and develop innovative technologies that
provide sustainable energy and materials. To achieve this ambitious goal, is logical to extend ECCSEL ERIC with this longer term view on sustainable carbon management next to the need for direct GHG reduction via CO2 storage.

Among various approaches, three main pathways offers strategic alignment with ECCSEL:

  1. Thermochemical Conversion and Hydrogenation of CO2
  2. Electrochemical and Photochemical Conversion of CO2
  3. CO2 Conversion to Solid Carbonates
