CERTH/ISFTA is the main Greek organisation for the promotion of research and technological development aiming at the improved and integrated exploitation of solid fuels and their by-products.
Most important activities include: Promotion, implementation and improvement of “cleaner” coal combustion technologies, Minimization of pollutants including fly ash and other by-products utilisation and CO2 capture and sequestration technologies, Optimization of coal deposits exploration techniques and development of innovative environmental management methods, Biomass and/or waste co-combustion, Promotion and enhancement of gasification and hydrogen production technologies, Technology transfer from and to market operators and decision makers. ISFTA has been awarded an « Excellence » 2005 by the Greek Ministry of Development and EU evaluators. CERTH/ISFTA participated in European research projects related to CO2 CCS technologies such as ENCAP, ASSOCOGS, C2Hupgrade, and CO2NET. In addition, CERTH/ISFTA is the coordinator of the network on CCS for Greece and has participated in the RFCS project ABETRAP (CO2 and other gases measurement). The Institute has also conducted feasibility study on CCS for Greece (financed by PPC) and feasibility study on CCS for a French power plant (financed by ENDESA). Moreover, it has represented Greece in the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum and in the European Technology Platform on CCS.
